R4: Basket Weaving

Ease: 7/10

Price: $$

Is it a hobby?: Yes

Total score: 75 (C)

Summary:

Overall, Basketry is a great way to feel like you are one with the earth. You connect with elements of reed, water, and impatience. I got lazy and watched more Netflix than I’d like to admit during this hobby, which means I only made one basket. More skilled hobbyists could probably watch tv while doing this, but why half ass two things when you can full ass one. I chose tv. Basket weaving deserves better, honestly. Official score of C, but honorary score of B-.

Process:

  1. Do a Google

Unsurprisingly, I was not sure where to start. There are a lot of resources out there, both free and paid. I landed at the holiest of holies for crafting: YouTube. This short video gave me an idea of where to start.

  2. Order Supplies ($35)

After seeing that video, I wanted to start with something small to get the feel of it. She listed her one material (Ratton Reed #3), so I ordered a size up on Amazon because, full transparency, it was cheaper if I went with #4 so I wouldn’t have to pay for shipping.

I also bought a basketry kit which came with reed cutters and other things that I’m still not sure how to use.

  3. LFG

Once my supplies came in, I made a total of one basket - using step-by-step instructions I found here.

I have enough supplies to probably make another 1-2 baskets. But I’ve been pretty lazy lately and I started re-watching The Flash and Community. Basketry would probably get a better score if I wasn’t so enamored with Netflix.
